I am a medical doctor currently finishing my five year residency in Internal Medicine at Hospital Universitario Fundación Alcorcón (date of graduation: May 2023). Since medical school I've held a keen interest in medical education, digital health & innovation.
On the doorstep of finishing my training as a specialist in internal medicine, I'm interested in job opportunities that will permit me to apply and grow my skills in leadership, digital health and/or medical education, be it in clinical, non-clinical or mixed roles.
Since entering medical school I have gravitated towards leadership and innovation roles, being a member of both my local and national medical student delegations. It was at these institutions where I developed my interest & passion for medical education and digital health.
As a member of my local student delegation I had my first experience with leadership as the vice president of the IV National Conference on Medical Education. This event gathered over 600 students from all over Spain to supplement their training by lectures and workshops on various topics. As vice president I helped design the scientific program, as well as coordinated the logistics such as venue reservations, sponsorships and publicity.
Since then I've had the opportunity to increase my leadership skills and role in the medical community thanks to social media. My main presence has been on Twitter under the handle @mgalandejuana . I maintained a very active profile on that platform until the COVID pandemic with a maximum of 10.000 followers. The content I curated consisted in personal insights into current medical events as well as clinical teaching points for students and professionals alike.
My presence on social media gave me the opportunity to lecture in various universities on the subject of digital health and participate in national and international conferences such as the AMEE and ICRE conferences. My experiences there lead me to organize the first official Digital Health conference in Madrid (MediMAD conference) as co-chair.
During my last years of medical school I was drawn towards the medical startup world. This led me to several "hackathon" events first as a participant and then mentor. The most notable was the IDEA2 program, organized by the regional government of Madrid and the MIT consortium. It was in that program where, together with a group of exceptional programmers and technicians, we developed a model for diagnosis of Alzheimer spectrum diseases by videooculagraphy. Our project was chosen as the winner of the 2015 IDEA2 contest.
These events have given me a more complete vision of the healthcare system and it's actors, which has been invaluable during my training as a specialist in internal medicine. As a resident, I focused on acquiring clinical skills with a focus on autoimmune systemic diseases and POCUS (Point-of-care-ultrasound). During my last years of residency I participated in various research projects, both clinical (SOLIDARITY trial) and non-clinical (qualitative projects and posters).
Throughout all my training, both in medical school and residency, I have maintained a driven interest in medical education & teaching. This involved taking various courses & electives on the subject, as well as participating in national and international conferences on #MedEd as both speaker & attendee. I've applied these skills daily in my work, be it with fellow residents & interns, medical students or patients and their families.
