I volunteered in the cafe to help make a difference in the community, by providing my time and a service to others. My role as part of the team required me to work closely with people of various age groups, as well as those from within the community. This enabled me to adapt and improve my communication and service skills on different levels - either on a professional level with my team or on a social and hospitable level with our clients.
I was employed as a volunteer by Survivor, a retail charity outlet who's main aim is supporting survivors of domestic abuse. My goal was to obtain the relevant experience needed to work in retail and to be able to be of help to this very important charity. Whilst volunteering, I received specific training which broadened my understanding on how to work with the various female clients that often frequented the store, and in some cases to better understand their personal needs because of their personal situations. The specific training also further helped me to understand in some cases, how to liaise with a variety of customers of varied personalities and to work and help them in a professional and compassionate way.
Working for Survivor helped me to grow and become more socially aware and understanding of the various plights of certain customers. This also helped me to develop my skills on communication, understanding and ability to quickly adapt to each client when working with them and their needs while they shopped.
As someone who has always lived in a home with various animals, dogs, a parrot, fish, & cats, I have over the years developed a certain love, acceptance, tolerance and need to have pets around and in my life. This led me to reach out and offer pet sitting services, in a capacity that I could handle alongside my schooling in my teen years.
Over the past couple of years, I have been called upon to pet sit for family, friends or neighbours and have regularly accepted recurring requests to visit and care for their animals whilst they are away.
