I have been working in the emergency department at the RDE for 7 years now. This was initially as an SHO but for the past 2 years I have been working as a middle grade doctor, a senior doctor in the department.
This has involved working in minors, majors and Resus. I am therefore comfortable seeing patients of varying priority and urgency and with a wide range of presentations. I am again competent in treating a sick patient and also with minor injuries. This has been complementary to my work as a GP as I am more experienced at identifying an unwell patient and need to escalate to secondary care.
This job has further developed my interpersonal skills as working well with members of the team is crucial in this environment.
As a senior doctor in the department I have been supervising the review of patient by doctors with less experience then myself and have taken charge of areas of the department. This has allowed my to develop my clinical leadership skills.
The experience I have in the emergency department has also meant that I have well practiced practical skills some of which are transferrable to general practice.
I have experience working in a foreign health care setting, though the system does not differ greatly to that in the UK this shows my ability to adapt to new work, surroundings and culture. I believe I open minded and aware of how a persons environment can affect their health and am able to consider a diagnosis depending on a persons surroundings and culture.
This was a small hospital where I worked with just one other doctor.
Given the high level of tourism in the area and the demographic being a large proportion of people between the ages of 18-35 I managed a lot of complications from drugs and alcohol.
I also became well practiced in managing minor and major injuries in this hospital again due to the age of patients and the active community.
